During the holidays, the family kitchen is crazy crazy: the blender spins, the timer buzzes, the flying knife. So yes, it’s understandable that many of us are just away from experienced cooks. Especially when the knife comes out, mother is breathing.
But outside, you missed it.
As part of All Things Considered discovery recipes, we asked the Brass Sisters of Cambridge, the so-called comfort food queen, to collect family recipes.
They say, don’t avoid that holiday kitchen!
Instead, they ask you to gently ask your elders’ favorite dishes, then write down these family recipes before they have time.
This is the recipe they make for their aunt Ida Tucker Katziff’s poppy seed cookies, and although Ida’s aunt may be cranky, they’re glad they did.
Marilyn Brass said, “we used to spend every Friday night with aunt IDA. For nearly 15 years, they talked and watched the prime-time soap opera Dallas (originally, when JR was shot) and ate.
“We would eat a bagel, and we would eat Turkish cakes, but the best part was she would take something out of a postage stamp refrigerator and heat it in a reliable oven,” said blass. ”
IDA is a self-taught baker. “She has what we call goldeneh hendts. It is the Yiddish language of the golden hand, “said Brass. “Whatever she did, whatever she did came out, and I had to tell you, her poppy seed biscuit was like falling from the sky.
The cake is crisp and delicious with poppy seeds and sandy, while the brass says you can’t just eat one.
After years of Friday night, Marilyn’s sister, sheila, summoned the courage to propose to aunt IDA. Not only did she get it, but she gave her niece two special instructions — keep the poppy seeds fresh in the refrigerator, and not over the dough.
When auntie IDA died, the brass sisters paid tribute to her: they made copies of the recipe at IDA’s funeral, baked cookies and Shared it with friends and family.
“It turned out that family and friends were sitting around her memorial week talking about IDA, reading her poppy seed cookie recipe, and crushing those delicious cookies! “Said Marilyn bras.
Aunt IDA’s poppy seed biscuit.
Our aunt Ada baked the cookies for more than 60 years and brought them to the party for the joy of our four generations. We baked the cookies and served them at aunt IDA’s memorial after the funeral, because the recipe was part of her legacy. She keeps her poppy seeds fresh in the refrigerator.

Three cups of flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 cup poppy seed.
1 cup peanut oil
1 cup of sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
Place the oven rack in the middle. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cover a 14-by-16-inch baking tray with aluminum foil and face up. Apply the vegetable spray foil or use the silicone lining.
Sift the flour and baking powder together; Add poppy seeds.
In addition, whisk peanut oil, sugar, eggs and herbs in a medium bowl. Add filtered dry ingredients and mix them together. Refrigerate the dough for an hour or until it is strong enough.
Use a flour hand or a disposable glove to remove a teaspoon of dough and roll it into a ball. Place the dough on a baking sheet, about 2 inches apart, or 12 cookies per slice. Make a circle with your fingers (instead of scrolling or punching). Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges are slightly browned. Let the cookies cool for 1 minute on the baking tray and then transfer the cookies to the rack. Biscuits will be crisp after cooling.
Place the wax paper in a covered jar or in a sealed plastic bag or container.
