Travel in the New Year? A church or meditation room is hidden somewhere in the airport you pass. Sixteen of the country’s 20 largest airports have churches and many in the world.

I am a contemporary American religious sociologist, and have written two articles on airport chaplains and churches. My interest in airport churches began with a simple curiosity – why are there churches in airports and who USES them? After several visits – including the Logan church, my hometown airport in Boston – I concluded that they reflected a broader set of changing norms around American religion.

How can there be a church at the airport?

The country’s first airport chapel was designed for staff, not passengers, and was made up of Catholic leaders from the 1950s and 1960s to ensure that parishioners took part in public events.

America’s first “aircraft carrier” was built by Boston archbishop Richard j. Cushing, who was at Logan airport in 1951, works for people at the airport. Neon signs point to small churches and commemorative CARDS issued by the church.

The protestant church is here. First in New York – and Kennedy. It was designed in the shape of a Latin cross and was joined by a synagogue in the 1960s. The churches are some way from the main station: passengers wishing to see them must go out. They later leveled and rebuilt various parts of Kennedy.

In the 1970s and 1980s, protestant churches opened in terminals at Atlanta and Dallas airports in Texas.

Become more inclusive.

By the 1990s and the 21st century, the single-faith church had become a “dying breed”, and most people began to welcome people from all religions. Many are transformed into reflective Spaces or tired travelers meditating.

Some airports, such as Kennedy international airport, continue to have the name “virgin,” indicating the origin of their faith.

Other objects include religious symbols and a range of religious traditions. In charlotte, north Carolina, for example, there are many religious classics, as well as prayer blankets, beads and works of art from major religions around the world.

Different airports, different rules.

As these examples show, no two airports negotiate the space of the church in the same way. What is allowed in one city is usually not allowed in another. Regional, historical and demographic factors are often factors that influence decision-making, including the religious composition of the region. These can even be based on who started the church, or how many religions there are in a city.

Some airports, such as the Chicago hare, have strict rules for impromptu religious meetings inside and outside the church. Some people use their public broadcasting system to announce religious services. Others have banned such announcements, and even airport chaplains have refused to allow the expression of any religious space.


If they are included in an airport map, the church is usually designated as a symbol of prayer. Even so, they are hard to find. About half of the churches are located on the front of the airport, and the other half can only be accessed through security checks.

Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and laguardia, New York, have only four large American airports with no church space, although such space is being considered. Meanwhile, in laguardia, a Catholic priest met in a conference room.

These Spaces and their causes of change are special and intense localization. These churches reveal a range of methods of religion and spirituality in contemporary America.

So pay attention to these little churches during your trip. Note their similarities and differences, and recognize the importance of local history in solving the problems of the church state at airports and elsewhere.
