I asked three experts about their best winter skin care tips.
I can always tell me that my oily/blended skin dries on both sides of my nose in the winter, my lips are dry and cracked, and even thick cream won’t help. This is a winter skin problem: between dry and cold temperatures, this season dehydrates, irritates, sometimes itches, and even highlights fine lines and wrinkles.
When we think about our hot showers and stimulating soap, our skin is particularly susceptible to environmental dryness, says Melissa Piliang, a dermatologist at the Cleveland clinic. “Cold winter air has lower humidity than warm summer air. “With the hot air from the stove and the hot water from the shower, our skin becomes very dry,” piliang said. “The outer layer of the skin is made up of fat and fat, which ACTS as a barrier to protect the skin from the sun. Therefore, we must pay special attention to our skin in winter. But does keeping the bay dry during the winter really work? I asked piliang and two other dermatologists for the best advice.
Change your skin care routine.
“Most people don’t realize that not only does the weather change in winter, but your skin does,” says celebrity aesthetician Gina Marie. When your skin changes, so should your product.
Your daily skin care routine doesn’t reduce it, the better. “In the winter, you need a heavy cream moisturizer, not a light, water-based lotion for the summer,” she said.
Add David Lortscher, a dermatologist, founder and CEO of Curology: “your skin may need to moisturize in the morning to help it adapt to changes in the environment. Gel products are best for spring and summer, but not autumn and winter. For those living at a certain latitude, such as north Miami, heavier moisturizers are better in autumn and winter to prevent indoor heating and cold drying. ”
Lortscher recommends looking for long-lasting moisturizers, such as EltaMD, which has a strong moisturizer, or contains hyaluronic acid or glycerin, which can be absorbed in water. He even suggests using vaseline as a base product, such as CeraVe Healing or vaseline, for ultra-dry skin. (there has been much discussion about the potentially harmful ingredients of vaseline and mineral oil, but scientific research has shown no risk.)
If your skin is sensitive, look for ceramide, a naturally occurring lipid (fat) in skin products. “Ceramides act as a barrier to protect sensitive skin from outside harm,” says Lortscher. One option is Dr. Jart, which makes thick, moisturizing and winter ceramide creams.
For cold months, you should also consider replacing exfoliating or foaming cleansers with something more moisturizing. I like Biologique Recherche Lait U cleanser, but some good pharmacy options include CeraVe moisturizer cleanser or Neutrogena ultra-soft moisturizer.
